Collections Management Systems


A computerised system that combines a catalogue with other functions that help to manage a museum collection.
The abbreviation CMS is rarely used, the acronym being more usually associated with Content Management Systems.

Database management systems

Some generic database management systems have been configured by individual museums to work as Collections Management Systems, notably:
  • Access, a desktop database management system developed by Microsoft, sometimes used as the basis for a locally-built collections management system
  • FileMaker Pro Advanced, a desktop database management system developed by FileMaker Inc., sometimes used as the basis for a locally-built collections management system

  • Verisart, a blockchain based cataloguing and authentication system which can be used by collections management systems, developed by Verisart
